TISSUE EXPANDER TO IMPLANT
WHAT IS BREAST RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY?
Breast reconstruction is a procedure in which the shape of the breasts is restored following a mastectomy for the treatment of breast cancer. During a breast reconstruction procedure, implants may be used.
WHY OPT FOR BREAST RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY?
Breast reconstruction can be very helpful in improving one's self-esteem following a mastectomy. It will provide an aesthetically pleasing breast contour, and help you avoid the need for an external prosthesis.
WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE INVOLVE?
In the case of a tissue expander to implant procedure, the breast reconstruction process begins with the placement of a tissue expander at the time of the mastectomy.
During the tissue expansion process, Dr September will place a tissue expander, which looks much like a balloon, under the pectoral muscle. Over the course of a few months, a saline fluid will be injected through a small valve under the skin, filling the tissue expander gradually over time. As the balloon fills, the skin stretches. When the skin has stretched sufficiently, Dr September will perform a second procedure in which the tissue expander is removed and replaced with a permanent implant.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER THE PROCEDURE?
It is quite normal to feel some pain and discomfort following the procedure. Dr September will advise you as to when you can resume your normal activities, although in most cases it is necessary to rest for around six weeks after the surgery. You will need to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting while you heal.
You will need to attend regular follow-up appointments with Dr September so that he can monitor your reconstructed breasts. While your breasts won't feel exactly as they did before your mastectomy, you can expect symmetry and a natural-looking breast contour.
